Recycling/Composting/Trash Program for Tenants

At 455 Market Building, we pride ourselves on our award-winning recycling program. In addition, we have implemented a tenant compost program (as of April 21, 2009). For our efforts, we have been honored to receive:

  • 2009 LEED Certification at Silver Level
  • 2010 Earth Award Recognition for Continued Excellence
  • 2010 Certificate of Award for Recognition in High Performance - GOLD Environmental Challenge
Cushman & Wakefield (Partner in EPA's WasteWise Program)
  • 2009 Earth Award Recognition for Continued Excellence
  • 2008 Earth Award
  • 2007 Earth Award Recognition (the City of San Francisco enhanced the CoRY to include energy conversation)
  • 2005 CoRY (Commercial Recycler of the Year) Award
We receive recognition for our high diversion rates (amount of material we recycle or compost versus sent to landfill) and energy conservation. Our Tenants help in making these programs possible.

We recycle in five ways:
1) all paper recycling
2) bottles & cans recycling
3) cardboard recycling
4) composting
5) electronics recycling by Green Citizen

The evening janitorial staff picks up recycling bins when they are full, or 1-2 times per week. This way, we keep Tenants operating costs low by avoiding extra union crew needs. Composting (started April 21, 2009) is picked up every evening and the compostable liner is replaced.

In October, 2009. the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and Mayor Newsom signed into law San Francisco's Universal Recycling and Composting Ordinance. The law requires all persons in San Francisco to separate refuse into recycling, composting and trash (in properly labeled and conveniently available containers: blue for recyclables, green for compostables and black for trash).

You can make it easier for janitorial staff by bringing your individual waste to the centrally located (colored) container within your Suite (usually in your kitchen).

Composting - Green Bins
All tenants receive one green bin. Keep this bin in a central location (e.g. kitchen).

What goes in the green bin?

  • All food items
  • Paper food plates
  • Floral Waste
  • Coffee and tea grounds

Bottles and Cans Recycling - Blue Bins

New Tenants receive one blue bin. Keep this bin in a central location (e.g. kitchen).

What goes in the blue bin?

  • all glass bottles & jars
  • all rigid plastic (tubs, containers, lids and plastic-ware) including yogurt containers and top foil
  • steel and tin food cans
  • aluminum cans, foil & food tins

Note: Please empty any food items into compost bin and rinse out the container before placing in blue bin.

Do not put the following materials in the blue bin:

  • mirrors
  • drinking glasses
  • dishes
  • plastic bags (can bring bags to kiosk located in Garage Level of Bldg.)
  • Styrofoam, plastic wraps and straws

All Paper Recycling - Unlined Grey Bins

New Tenants receive a bin for all paper recycling. Keep this bin in a central location (e.g. copy room). Individual trays for desks are available through the Building Office. Employees must empty their trays in the centrally-located paper recycling bin. Janitors do not empty individual desk trays.

What goes in the grey unlined paper recycling bin?

  • white & colored paper
  • newspapers & magazines
  • envelopes, post-it notes & junk mail

Some tenants have shredding vendors for ALL their paper recycling. If so, please advise the Building Office. You are helping contribute to 455 Market's Earth Award status!

Cardboard (Box) Recycling

To recycle cardboard, please take these simple steps:
1. Break boxes down, completely flat.
2. Place by one of the recycle bins in your suite (usually kitchen).

Do not block any hallways, entries or exits. Do not put cardboard outside your suite. If you have more than a few boxes, call the Building Office and let us know. We will provide service for excessive amounts for a fee. If you do not break down your cardboard, we will charge you for the janitor's time.

HELPFUL TIP: If you are moving in, or have a large order arrive, coordinate the pick-up and re-use of your boxes with your vendor (usually you can get a credit for returning boxes for reuse).

Electronics Recycling Services by GREEN CITIZEN
A Green Citizen kiosk is located in the Building's Garage on Level G-1. You can drop off:

  • small batteries
  • cell phones
  • CDs & DVDs
  • plastic bags and baggies
  • other small electronic items

For large electronic items (computer monitors, TVs, laptops, etc.) we can arrange a special Green Citizen pick up for you to be billed on your next rent statement. Or, you can contact Green Citizen for a quote or with any questions about what they can pick up.

1-877-918-8900
We partner with Green Citizen each year and host a FREE pickup day for electronic waste (usually in April).

REMEMBER to contact the
Building Office for pick-up scheduling.

Trash (Landfill Waste)
Trash containers are provided by the Tenant. The evening janitorial crew empties trash and replaces the clear bag. Regular clear bags are for dry non-recyclable trash only. You will find that there is hardly any landfill waste - most items are compostable or recyclable. To save janitorial time and the cost of liners, please bring your individual waste to the centrally located containers within your Suite.

Other Waste
Toner Cartridges
Toner cartridges are considered HAZMAT (hazardous waste). Do not put toner cartridges into trash or recycle bins. To dispose of toner, contact your vendor or use the return packaging usually provided with new cartridges.

Furniture and Items Not Recyclable
For furniture you are discarding, or items not recyclable, we can arrange a pickup from 1-800-GOT-JUNK to be billed on your next rent statement. Or, you can also call them directly for a quote or with any questions about what they can pick up. Just remember to let us know so we can schedule the pickup.

We appreciate and thank you for your ongoing cooperation in the Recycling Program at 455 Market!
