Recycling and Trash Program for Tenants

At the 455 Market Building, we pride ourselves on our award-winning recycling program. We have been honored to receive:

  • 2005 CoRY (Commercial Recycler of the Year) Award
  • 2007 Earth Award (the City of San Francisco enhanced the CoRY to include energy conservation)
  • 2008 Earth Award
We receive recognition for our high diversion rates (amount of material we recycle or compost versus sent to landfill) and energy conservation. Our Tenants help in making these programs possible.

We recycle in five ways:
1) all paper recycling
2) bottles & cans recycling
3) cardboard recycling
4) composting
5) electronics recycling by Green Citizen

The evening janitorial staff picks up recycling bins when they are full, or 1-2 times per week. This way, we keep Tenants' operating costs low by avoiding extra union crew needs.

All Paper Recycling - Grey Unlined Bins

New Tenants receive one grey bin. Keep this bin in a central location (e.g. copy room). Individual trays for desks are available through the Building Office. Employees must empty their tray in the grey bin. Janitors will not empty individual desk trays.

What goes in the grey bin?

  • white & colored paper
  • newspapers & magazines
  • envelopes, post-it notes & junk mail

Additional bins are available through the Building Office.

If your office has a shredding vendor for confidential papers, please advise the Building Office. You are helping contribute to 455 Market's Earth Award status!

Bottles and Cans Recycling - Blue Bins

New Tenants receive one blue bin. Keep this bin in a central location (e.g. kitchen).

What goes in the blue bin?

  • glass bottles & jars
  • all plastic bottles (#2, #4 & #5 - check symbol on the bottom)
  • aluminum & tin cans
  • aluminum foils & food tins

Additional bins are available through the Building Office for a small fee.

Do not put the following materials in the blue bin:

  • mirrors
  • drinking glasses
  • dishes
  • Styrofoam or plastic bags
  • Cardboard Recycling

To recycle cardboard, please take these simple steps:
    1. Break boxes down, completely flat.
    2. Place by one of the recycle bins in your suite.

Do not block any hallways, entries or exits. Do not put cardboard outside your suite. If you have more than a few boxes, call the Building Office and let us know. We will provide service for excessive amounts for a fee. If you do not break down your cardboard, we will charge for the janitors' time.

HELPFUL TIP: If you are moving in, or have a large order arrive, coordinate the pick-up and re-use of your boxes with your vendor (usually you can get a credit for returning the boxes for reuse).

    Composting
We have a composting program at the Building for retail tenants only at this time. In the future, 455 Market will introduce composting for all tenants.

Electronics Recycling Services by GREEN CITIZEN
A Green Citizen kiosk is located in the Building's Garage on Level G-1. You can drop off:

    • small batteries
    • cell phones
    • CDs & DVDs
    • other small electronic items

For large electronic items (computer monitors, TVs, laptops, etc.) we can arrange a special Green Citizen pick up for you to be billed on your next rent statement. Or, you can contact Green Citizen for a quote or with any questions about what they can pick up.

    1-877-918-8900
    REMEMBER to contact the
    Building Office for pick-up scheduling.

    Trash
Trash containers should be provided by the Tenant. The evening janitorial crew empties trash and replaces the clear bag. Regular clear bags are for dry non-recyclable trash only (e.g. pens, binder clips). Heavier clear bags in kitchens are for wet trash or food waste (e.g. paper cups, napkins, coffee grounds, plants).

We use clear bags so our janitors can sort, separate and diversify recyclable material from the trash. You make their job easier by placing recycling material in the correct container within your Suite.

    Other Waste
    Toner Cartridges
Toner cartridges are considered HAZMAT (hazardous waste). Do not put toner cartridges into trash or recycle bins. To dispose of toner, contact your vendor or use the return packaging usually provided with new cartridges.

    Furniture and Items Not Recyclable
For furniture you are discarding, or items not recyclable, we arrange a pickup from 1-800-GOT-JUNK to be billed on your next rent statement. Or, you can also call them directly for a quote or with any questions about what they can pick up. Just remember to let us know so we can schedule the pickup.

We appreciate and thank you for your ongoing cooperation in the Recycling Program at 455 Market!
